Updated: Aug 12, 2019
There is no doubt that the temple of Queen Hatshepsut is one of the most important temples, especially after the discovery of the temple of the 11th dynasty beside it.
The temple of Queen Hatshepsut is copied by her architect from the temple of the 11th dynasty especially in the idea of the elevated terraces.
The name of el dier-elbahari is applied to the site which means (the northern monastery) which is not referring to anything ancient but to the Christian monastery which was actually erected on the top of the site of the temple dating back to the seventh century A.D, how ever the ancient name was (zosert0which means the holy, and when Hatshepsut erected the temple beside the temple of the 11th dynasty it became (zosert zesro)which means holy of the holies and the two temples together were called (zoserti)which means the two holies.
Why The Temple was built ?
When Queen Hatshepsut decided to built her temple she had more than one reason in her mind.
1-queen Hatshepsut decided to be in the paradise of god amon as the temple was dedicated to him, but like other temples in egypt it has collection of other gods , so there is a chapel to god anubis and another chapel for goddess Hathour.
2-the temple intended to be mortuary temple for her and her family, indeed she first intended to have her tomb which is now in the valley of the kings underneath this temple, but after she started to cut her tomb through the cliffs, they found that the rock underneath the temple to be of bad quality, so they cancelled the whole idea.
3-queen Hatshepsut wanted to emphasis her legitimate right for the throne of Egypt, by creating the story of her divine birth from the patron god of Egypt (Amon re). This is a very same idea which was repeated in the temple of luxour by king Amenhotep III.
The temple suffered more than one reason of destruction
1-the family problems between Queen Hatshepsut and her step son Tuthmosis III. the temple is certainly belongs to her queen Hatshepsut, but the name of her father Tuthmosis I exist there , together with her husband Tuthmosis II who was her husband and brother , how ever the name Tuthmosis III exist there , queen Hatshepsut was to Tuthmosis II his aunt, stepmother, mother in law as he married her daughter from king Tuthmosis II who was his father from a minor wife non of the royal blood and Tuthmosis the 3rd married the daughter of queen Hatshepsut as a way of royal marriage to ensure the throne of egypt after the death of his father.
King Tuthmosis III destroyed the temple after the death or the disappearance of his mother in law ..
